How It's Made

Each sphere is made up of 180 precisely cut triangles. The triangles are assembled into 12 pentagons and 20 hexagons. These shapes are all glued together to form a ball with 180 flat facets. This rough ball is sanded on a lathe to form a true smooth sphere. Clear lacquer is applied and rubbed to a satin sheen.

01

The sphere starts out as 3/4" hardwood or plywood

02

The flat stock is cut into strips and both edges are beveled

03

From the flat stock 180 triangles are cut with two compound angled edges

04

The triangles are assembled into 20 hexagons and 12 pentagons

05

The hexagons are all glued together to form a spherical shape

06

The 12 pentagons are then fit one by one into the 12 remaining spaces

07

The "ball" with 180 flat facets is then sanded on a lathe to make it into a smooth sphere

08

A clear finish of water based lacquer is applied and rubbed to a matte sheen
